Reduce owner dependency
in your business

Building a business that relies less on you

No business runs entirely without its owner and nor should it. But many depend on the owner far more than they need to.

I know this from experience. For a long time in my own business almost everything came back to me. Changing that took a deliberate effort to build systems, develop people and let go of things I'd held onto tightly. It's also what made the business worth buying when I sold it in 2023.

My program helps owners of service-based businesses in Adelaide, regional South Australia and beyond do the same. You'll have someone beside you who has been through it.

Signs your business depends on you too much

  • You can't take two weeks off without the phone ringing

  • Every decision, big or small, waits for you

  • Key clients only want to deal with you

  • Your team checks with you before acting, even when they should know the answer

  • Much of what keeps the business running lives in your head

  • Growth has stalled because there's only so much of you to go around

If a few of these sound familiar you're not alone. It is one of the most common issue I see in established service businesses.

Why does this matter?

It wears you down. Long hours, no real breaks and the feeling that everything rests on you.

It holds the business back. The business can only grow as far as your capacity. Good people leave when they aren't given room to step up.

Risk is increased in your business. If you are away for an extended period of time unexpectedly your business could grind to a halt.

It lowers the value. When the owner holds the client relationships and the know-how, a buyer sees risk. That risk comes off the price, or the sale doesn't happen at all.

How the program works

Over six months we work out where the business leans on you most. Then we move it piece by piece to your systems and your team.

  • A four-hour first session: We map where the business relies on you, agree what to tackle first and set out a plan.

  • Monthly three-hour sessions: We work through your priorities one at a time. You put them into practice in between.

  • A review at month three: We look at what’s changed and adjust the plan.

  • Support between sessions: Phone or email when you need it.

Sessions are in person in Adelaide or online.

What you can expect to change

By the end of six months you will have:

  • a clear picture of where the business relies on you, and what you've already changed

  • fewer things landing on your desk

  • a team that's more confident making decisions

  • more of your time back

A business that relies less on you is also worth more. If you sell one day you'll be ready. If you don't you'll have a stronger business and more of your time back.

Engagement Options: Tailored to Your Journey

Every small-to-medium enterprise operates on a unique timeline with varying internal resources. You can take the first step in putting a strategy in place, and choose to engage additional support if required from there.

Is this program right for you?

Even if you are unsure whether you are ready to sell, or make the decision not to, working to an exit strategy will still deliver a range of benefits to your business.

Exit planning keeps your options open.

A business that runs smoothly with less reliance on you should be more profitable, easier to manage and far less stressful to own. And if you do decide to sell, you'll go in with clarity and confidence, and in a position to get full value for what you've built.
